About Domains

We recommend you read this page thoroughly if you are new to the Internet and may not have a full understanding of what domains are, and their importance to the World Wide Web. Domains are addresses where services reside: websites, email, databases and more. Whatever you choose to have in your domain, there are some initial points you should understand: Domains in the US are kept in a single registry. This is a massive database containing all the domains registered under a General Top Level Domain such as .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and many others. There are many recognized companies who are authorized to sell domain names. These are called "registrars." They all do the same job, so there is very little difference between them except for the price they charge for registering domain names. The registrar's job is to sell you a domain name, then communicate to the single registry all the information for contacting the registrant (you, the owner), the administrative, technical, and billing contacts (all generally at the web hosting company), as well as the DNS (Domain Name Servers) on which your domain's web pages, email addresses, etc. will be housed. DOMAIN INFORMATION MENU
A
Web address (domain name) is the Internet equivalent
of your business address online. On the Internet,
your Web Address acts as both your storefront
and an address, giving your customers a place
to visit online whenever they want to contact
you, find out more about your business, or purchase
your products and services. You've probably
already been introduced to Web addresses without
your knowing it. For example, here are a few
well-known Web addresses with which you might
be familiar:
No Two Names Are Alike One
of the most important aspects of Web addresses
is that they are unique. No two people or
organizations can have the same Web address.
So if you register the Web address mycompany.com,
you ensure that everyone in the world who
types mycompany.com into a Web browser will
be taken directly to you and only to you.

you find a name that that suits your needs,

2. HOW CAN I HAVE MY OWN DOMAIN ADDRESS? If your domain is to be located at Sierra Tel Internet, we will be happy to handle the application for you at no extra charge. If you are not already an STI subscriber, you will need to supply us with the following information:
Type
a domain name in the box below to see if it
is available.

Prices above may change. Always view the STI Pricing Page for current prices. If your website generates huge amounts
of traffic (more than 5GB of outgoing file transfer per month), there
is a small additional fee. See STI's Services
& Pricing page for full information
and price listings. 3. MOVING A DOMAIN TO STI FROM ANOTHER HOST When
you applied for your domain name, it linked
to DNS NAMESERVERS which are assigned a NUMBER
(IP ADDRESS). This NAMESERVER is the place where
your domain and its web pages reside. This is
the basic addressing system of the Internet
so people around the world can find your web
page. In order to move your domain to Sierra
Tel Internet's servers, you must break the link
with the old host NAMESERVERS and establish
a link to STI'S NAMESERVERS and IP ADDRESSES.
This can only be done by whoever is in charge
of the current host of your web domain. 1.

You will also need to give them updated address
and contact information for yourself so you
can be listed as BILLING CONTACT on the new
record they will file with Network Solutions,
the national registry of all .com, .org and
.net domain names. (Company Name, Name, Address,
City, State, Zip, Telephone, Fax, Email Address)
Once
your domain is moved to Sierra Tel Internet's
servers, and our personnel are listed as Administrative
and Technical contacts, we can then help you
with future changes to your domain records in
the registry database at Network Solutions,
Inc. Again, if you applied for a domain through
any other organization than Sierra Tel Internet,
we probably cannot help you move it to STI's
servers since we are not listed as a contact
on your original application.
4. MOVING
A DOMAIN FROM STI TO ANOTHER HOST
When
you plan to change domain hosting from Sierra Tel Internet's
servers, we require that you notify us in advance
so we can make arrangements regarding disposition
of your web files from our servers. STI cannot
approve a move of a domain without this notice, because
when the DNS Server change is made, anything currently hosted
by STI will cease, unless duplicate files are on your new host's
web servers. If your domain is registered through STI's contracted registrar (spiritdomains.com) and you wish to transfer from STI's to another provider's DNS servers, we will need full and complete contact information for the new Technical Contact for the domain (your new host's appointed Technical Contact). We will need the
technical contact's:
5. TRANSFERRING DOMAIN REGISTRATION 6. WHAT ARE THE REGISTRANT, ADMINISTRATIVE, TECHNICAL AND BILLING CONTACTS?
Things
change frequently regarding domain names. Contact
addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers
and other things need to be kept fully up to date
with the national database. In order to make life
easier for domain lessees, STI instituted a policy
in 1996 that our technical and administrative
people be listed as contact on all domains we
host. It has proven, over time, to be a great
assistance to our nearly 1,000 domains we host
from clients all over the world.
You don't really "own" a domain. Technically, you lease it from 1 to 10 years at a time, from whatever company you purchase the domain from (a registrar). There are 58 or more of companies appointed to handle the registration of domain names, but only NSI administers the single, master database (the registry). Most of the domains hosted by Sierra Tel Internet are leased by people not familiar with the technical aspects of domain registration, and who wish us to act on their behalf when technical or administrative questions require contact with the domain registry, the national database administrator for all domains in the United States that have the "top level" domain extensions .com, .edu, .mil, .org and .net. According to Network Solutions, contacts are individuals or groups who represent the registrant on matters related to the registrant's domain name. There are four types of contacts/agents: Registrant, Administrative, Technical, and Billing. The Registrant and Billing contact is you (lessee). The entity listed as the administrative, technical, or billing contact/agent should be the entity best able to answer questions about that particular aspect of the domain name's registration, and should be authorized to represent the domain name registrant. STI employs an administrator and technicial contact to help you with domain matters, such as moving your domain to another server, or changing your address information with Network Solutions. STI prefers that our Administrative and Technical contacts be listed with Network Solutions since, if we are not listed, we cannot act on your behalf when you request it. The "lessee" of a domain is generally the billing contact and person or company listed as "Registrant." STI never acts on your behalf without your knowledge, and you are always notified of any correspondence between Network Solutions and STI regarding your domain. When we register your domain for you, we send you a copy of the registration completion notice for your permanent records, as well as any other related correspondence. You can always request that you, as lessee of a domain name, be listed as administrative and technical contacts, however STI would not be able to help you in any matters before Network Solutions, Inc. related to your domain. If
you would like to apply for a domain, you can
do it yourself, or we can do it for you at no
charge. Just call 641-9006 or
email webmaster@sti.net for more information
on domains.
