Junkmail FAQ
Simple and Effective Email Protection!
Prevents Junkmail From Reaching Your Computer
How is STI Junk Email Filtering different from the spam filters in my email client?
Before the filters in your email client can do anything, you must download the email, possibly wasting time and bandwidth while waiting to read mail that you would not want anyway. The STI Junk Email Filtering does all email processing behind the scenes before messages arrive in your inbox. This saves time by not forcing you to download superfluous email, such as unsolicited offers. Moreover, improvements to the filters are done without modifications to your email client.
How is STI's new Red Condor solution an improvement over the older Postini system?
Both products provide a similar level of filtering but the new application uses a more modern method of viewing your quarantined messages. Now you will receive an email containing a summary of all messages that have been quarantined. This summary (called the Spam Digest) allows you to see the senders and subjects of all messages caught by the filter. This summary can be set to Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or turned off entirely. The Spam Digest allows you to view the message without having to log in separately to the junkmail application.
In our testing we found the Red Condor product is more effective, catches more spam, and provides fewer false positives.
My son’s Junkmail currently gets delivered to my Message Center. Will this functionality remain with STI's new Red Condor solution?
We will no longer combine multiple emails in one Message Center. One advantage to this is that (unlike the Postini junkmail solution) every email will have its own Message Center, at no additional cost to you. If you do not want your son to have access to his Personal Dashboard (and be able to view his junkmail), please contact technical support for an alternative solution.
I have a domain hosted with STI. As such, I pay a monthly fee for Postini Junkmail Filtering. How will the transition to the Red Condor product affect me?
Domain hosting customers may add junk and virus filtering to their domains for a monthly charge. If you have an existing Postini filter set up on your domain, you will be converted to the new Red Condor solution automatically. Pricing for junkmail protection on domain hosting accounts is changing slightly to a simpler model.
The $0.50 charge per email address is being dropped completely; however, our monthly charge for the service will be increasing slightly from $3.00 to $5.00. The $2.00 setup fee is being dropped completely as well. For most domain customers, this pricing change will represent a price reduction for Junkmail Filtering service. For very small domains (with 3 email addresses or less) this will represent a slight price increase.
How do I know junkmail is being filtered and not my regular (legitimate) email?
Advanced filtering techniques, including databases of known junkmail and real time analysis of new campaigns, maintain the effectiveness of the filter. Despite constant updates, some good email may get caught since the concept of junk email is subjective (one man's trash is another man's treasure). To avoid the problem, STI Junk Email Filtering allows you to put a label on mass mailed messages, and have them delivered to your inbox. You can easily identify them by the label you use.
Does someone read personal emails?
No. All email processing is done through automated filters, in milliseconds.
Am I notified of messages that are quarantined as suspicious email?
Yes! And you get to choose the frequency. Your Spam Digest is emailed to you, daily, weekly, monthly, or not at all. You can also log in to the Personal Dashboard at any time to monitor and review detained messages.
What are Personal Dashboard filter categories?
There are three categories based on the level of danger.
- Red Zone – Potentially dangerous:
- Spam: Unwanted mail
- Virus: Mail containing malware
- Phishing: Fraudulent email that tries to trick you into revealing personal information
- Adult: Mail that contains sexually explicit text or graphics, or sells sex enhancement products
- Yellow Zone – Suspicious
- Blank: Mail with no message body
- Forged: The mail sender's address might be fake
- Foreign: The character set of the message is non-English
- Attachment: The message contains one or more attachments
- Green Zone – Junk
- Junk: Unsolicited or bulk advertising
Do I need to set the Sensitivity level?
Gone are the days of needing to tell the filter how much unwanted mail you want. If it is unwanted, you don’t want it, right?
What are the options for handling suspicious messages?
Using the Personal Dashboard, you can set the filter to take one of four actions.
- Quarantine: Do not deliver to your inbox, until Released
- Markup: Add a label at the front of the subject line and deliver to your inbox
- Allow: Deliver to your inbox, just exactly as it was sent
- Block: Delete, without quarantining (caution: blocked messages cannot be retrieved)
What is the Friends list?
Entering specific email addresses, entire domains, or IP Addresses to the Friends list will allow these messages to flow directly to your inbox.
What is the Enemies list?
Entering specific email addresses, entire domains, or IP Addresses will cause ALL messages from those listed to be quarantined.
What if I want to receive junkmail?
You can have all messages delivered to your inbox by choosing “Allow” as the action for each category and subcategory in your Personal Dashboard.
How often is quarantined email deleted?
Messages are quarantined for 35 days following the receipt of the message and then they are deleted.
What if I receive spam, what should I do with it?
If junkmail reaches your inbox, you can simply delete the message or forward it to spam@redcondor.com. If you use Microsoft Outlook to receive your email, you can install Red Condor's plug-in (http://www.redcondor.com/plugin/download.html) to make reporting spam very easy.
What if legitimate email is quarantined in your Email Center?
Unfortunately, some legitimate email may be erroneously quarantined. This is due to the subjective nature of email messages and what could possibly be considered junkmail. If messages from one particular person are consistently being quarantined, add that person’s email address to the Friends list.
To receive a specific quarantined message, log in to the Personal Dashboard. From the Quarantine tab, select the message, then click the Release icon.
Does STI Junk Email Filtering watch for obscene language and other questionable content?
Yes, STI Junk Email Filtering considers sexually explicit text or graphics to be potentially dangerous.
Does the STI Junk Email Filtering watch for email only written in English?
STI Junk Email Filtering allows you to quarantine messages based on character sets. Languages that use the same basic alphabet (English, French, Spanish) are treated as English. Languages such as Chinese and Arabic that use other character sets can be filtered according to your needs.
